Yield Forecasting becomes harder as weather events are unpredictable, the damage to crops by floods & drought could be devastating.

So, how can we protect or at least collaborate with mother nature to mitigate some of the risks? The answer lies in AI and Satellite Imagery. Here is how...

In the face of unpredictable weather events, yield forecasting has become a significant challenge for the agricultural sector. The potential damage caused by floods and droughts can be catastrophic for crops, threatening our livelihoods and the food supply chain (I covered that in my previous post: A Global Challenge Amidst Climate Crisis). However, the integration of AI and data acquired by satellites orbiting earth into farming practices is emerging as a promising solution to mitigate some of these risks.

AI, Computer Vision, and Satellite Imagery are revolutionizing the way we approach agriculture. With the ability to process vast amounts of data, AI and machine learning can use satellite images to monitor crop health, soil conditions, and even predict future environmental changes. This technology provides stakeholders with critical insights that enable them to make informed decisions about resource allocation, irrigation, crop rotation, and more.

For instance, SatYield invented a novel framework for monitoring sustainable agricultural practices by using a versatile crop simulator, computer vision and satellite imagery, with the power of AI we fuse satellite data to provide near real-time monitoring of large croplands, offering highly accurate Yield estimations and biomonitoring parameters of crops. This approach not only improves resource allocation but also aligns agricultural practices with sustainable development goals towards "zero hunger".

Moreover, with the advancements in satellite technology, improved data quality with multiple bands we can distinguish between vegetated and non-vegetated areas, as well as to identify and classify crop types, providing valuable information for agronomists, farmers, and many other stakeholders.

The potential of AI and satellite imagery extends beyond yield forecasting. It also plays a crucial role in sustainable farming, Insurance, and commodity trading innovations by enhancing risk management and shaping agricultural practices which bolsters global food security.

While we cannot control climate, we can certainly adapt and prepare for her unpredictability. AI and satellite imagery stand at the forefront of this adaptation, offering a beacon of hope for sustainable agriculture in an era of climate uncertainty.

We must continue investing in development and improvement of AI for climate-dependent crops for a better future of resilient farming.
